Historic landmark removed for safekeeping
Stratford Place’s historic ‘Porter’s Lodge’ has been removed for safekeeping in advance of demolition work.
This heritage landmark with its distinctive sculpted lion is one of a pair that was installed in the 1770s to mark the entrance to Stratford Place. Over the years the surrounding architecture has changed drastically, and the remaining lodge has been removed and reinstated several times when adjacent buildings have been redeveloped. Today the lodge is regarded as being of special architectural and historical interest and is a grade II listed structure like many of the neighbouring buildings in Stratford Place. It has been placed in secure storage and will be reinstated when the project is complete.
