TUCA delivered on time
Crossrail's Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy (TUCA) has been completed within the thirty week design and build period. An innovative material called composite white wall panelling was incorporated into the walls of the building to help prevent noise from inside the building affecting the local community.
The decision to complete the building shell early and create a noise shield around the construction works allowed the contractor, Volker Fitzpatrick, to work unrestricted hours. This was key to meeting the demanding programme.
The academy, which has been built to address the shortage of people with the necessary skills to work on Crossrail and a range of other tunnelling projects across the UK has now been handed over to Crossrail for fit out and training preparations.
